As part of our two part summer driving tips guide we look here at how to keep your car and you safe during the hottest months of the year.
While traditionally winter is the most dangerous time of year for driving there is no doubt that the summer months still present their own dangers for the unprepared car owner, especially when it comes to longer trips.
Here the Insurance 4 My we are only too aware of this as we deal with scores of car insurance claims that could have been avoided had there been a little greater awareness around the dangers of summer car driving.
Because trips are generally longer in the summer you must, for instance, avoid fatigue by stopping regularly for ‘stretch breaks’ Fatigue is a form of impairment, so don't give in to that temptation to push on. If you started early, stop early. If you feel fatigued, have a good sleep before you take the wheel.
If you are travelling with young children, regular stops are a must. Bring plenty of items to keep them occupied. Special travel games and songs also help.
You must also think about keeping your car safe and to ensure you are covered get yourself a good car insurance policy, and perhaps even consider car breakdown cover if you haven’t already.
One other thing to think about from a car safety perspective is the steps you need to take if you are towing a caravan or trailer. With more and more of us opting to purchase such a thing the summer is the optimum time to make uses of them and you need to think carefully when driving and towing.
