Car breakdown is never a good thing even at the best of times but when you are in a European country it can be a nightmare in terms of cost and logistics if you have not taken out a good European car breakdown policy.
Without breakdown cover you have to organise everything, with the added difficulties of a language barrier and currency getting in the way of negotiations and with the cause of your breakdown often being fixable at the roadside often you can avoid a lot of the expense and time wasted.
So, what are the main causes of a European car breakdown? We list them all below:
1. A faulty battery – this is the most common fault and they can be minimised by checking connections and by giving it a full recharge once a fortnight.
2. Lost keys – this is always a favourite and when you are in a European country nipping home to get another set is not a great option. The only way to get it sorted is via an authorised dealer.
3. Tyre and wheel problems – tyres do go ‘pop’ and you must remember to check you’re spare before every long journey to ensure you have cover if they do.
4. Alternator – If your battery keeps going flat and your lights are dim then it may be the alternator
5. Starter motor – We are getting into more serious territory now as this will require a mechanic to replace it.
6. Distributor cap – this can crack causing dirt and moisture to get in.
7. Fuel – we all know someone that has put the wrong fuel in their car and this is a major reason for call out and European breakdowns because of the unfamiliarity with the pump systems.
8. Clutch cables – these can break but can be replaced at the roadside by a good breakdown recovery company.
9. Spark plugs – If these are not replaced you may find your car will not start and a breakdown recovery may be your only option.
10. HT leads – These should be checked before a European trip to avoid a breakdown. Your garage will do this for you.
