Find out four other essential car maintenance focal points in part two of our car breakdown cover is a necessity guide...
Suspension & Alignment – the wheels and suspension system work together to keep your tyres planted and your car stuck to the road. Not maintaining these can lead to all kinds of issues and will eventually lead to car breakdown.
Brakes – we have spoken a lot about these in this blog and the reasons for doing so are obvious. Properly working brakes are essential for safe driving, but old brake fluid or low fluid levels can lead to brake fade or failure. Fluid contamination also accelerates wear and corrosion of various brake hydraulic system components so if you feel your brake pedal is feeling soft or there is a delay in your braking get it checked out immediately.
Other Fluids -- Leaking fluids are a sure sign of needed maintenance. They also can be a dangerous fire hazard. Oil, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and brake fluids are all flammable and can burst into flame when contacting a hot engine or exhaust component. Have fluid leaks inspected and remedied as soon as they are detected.
Vision – If you cannot see when you are driving then you really are not thinking sensibly. Worn wiper blades are the bane of our lives but because we are often too busy to do anything about it we just try and continue as if they are OK and end up peering through smaller and smaller window screen gaps. Changing them is really easy and you can do it yourself or get the local car shop to do it for you so there’s no excuse for them becoming a cause of a breakdown or accident.
Check a vehicle's wiper blades at each oil change or whenever they fail to wipe the glass clean in a single swipe. The life of a rubber insert is typically six to 12 months depending on its exposure to heat, dirt, sunlight, acid rain and ozone. Streaking and chattering are common clues that the rubber is breaking down and needs replacement.
Check the washer fluid reservoir monthly and more often if the washers are used frequently. Top it up with a washer solution formulated to aid in the removal of insects and other debris. In winter, be sure to use a product with appropriate antifreeze protection.
