Forget all you have read and all you hear because officially the cost of motoring has actually FALLEN during 2009 according to official figures.
Scaremongery and fear that the economy would implode may have made us all feel less well off but the reality is quite different – with things like breakdown cover becoming more affordable than ever before.
Small falls in things such as breakdown cover have forced the overall cost of motoring down 5% and all the while many of the UK’s car owners have been cutting back on essential services in the false belief that things were getting more expensive.
The drop has been mainly driven by the cost of fuel of course and this is rising again as we speak but it is also the cost of things like breakdown cover that can now be purchased for as little as £40 a year or less.
While the price of petrol and diesel has fluctuated over the last 12 months, costs have fallen overall by ten per cent with the average motorist spending £1,184 per year in fuel. Diesel in particular has become much cheaper, with prices falling 14 per cent.
