The cold snap has reminded us that we really are now in winter and that should trigger thoughts of preparing our car or vehicle for the weeks of bad weather to come.

The reality is our lives are too busy, of course, and instead we wait until we suffer a car breakdown before we even consider breakdown cover – and then wish we had ‘the benefit of hindsight’.

We all do it and our best advice is to take out a cheap car breakdown cover policy before anything does happen. The following tips can also help minimise the risk of car breakdown so read them carefully to ensure you have an issue free winter of motoring.

1. Get your car serviced – it will ensure that all the important things have been checked and fluids topped up to help you avoid a car breakdown.

2. Pump up your car tyres – not only will this save you fuel but it will also give you better grip.

3. Look after your lights – you will put an increasing load on your lights because of the dark mornings and evenings. Always replace any broken bulbs immediately.

4. Fill up with fuel – running out in the snow is not much fun and it will only mean a call to your car breakdown company.

5. Ensure you can see -Winter weather can make it more difficult to see clearly when you are driving. Make sure you are prepared by topping up the screen wash and fitting new wiper.
