Unless you have been asleep for the past three weeks you might have noticed that there has been a bit of snow on the roads! As a result driving conditions have been a little less than favourable, causing accidents and breakdowns across the UK.
As experts in all things automotive the team at Rescue My Car have been fielding calls from many anxious customers looking for advice and snow driving tips to help keep them safer this January.
We have only been too happy to oblige of course and as a result we have pulled together this snow driving tips article to help keep our customers safe while driving this winter, and to minimise the need for rescue.
1. Even the most advanced braking systems available will not be a lot of use to you in snow or ice as the road surface will be so slippery that your tyres will not be able to find any grip. A lot of drivers can forget this obvious fact but the fact is that you MUST drive much more slowly and give yourself more room for slides and slips when driving in the snow.
2. You must do all you can to avoid having to brake heavily and the best way to slow down is to use ‘engine braking’, which means working down the gears until you end up in first from where you can come to stop. Brakes make tyres lose grip in the snow and so give yourself plenty of time and road to slow down.
3. When starting from a stop position in the snow a high gear like first will often just cause wheel or tyre slippage and you will go nowhere fast. A great snow driving tip is to set off in second or even third gear, as this will decrease your chance of spinning the wheels as they are turning slower.
4. Be wary of other drivers. This may sound untrusting but the fact is that a lot of drivers on UK roads do not have a lot of experience of snow driving and that can make them dangerous. Give everybody more room and you protect yourself.
