The ‘worst winter in 30 years’ has produced a huge spike not just in breakdown cover need but also in car insurance claims as motoring breakdowns hit an all time high.
Record numbers have called our car insurance line to report being unable to start their cars, or having suffered accidents due to the treacherous driving conditions.
Flat batteries affected more than a third of callers, with another significant problem being flat tyres on icy roads causing skidding and damage resulting from any impacts.
A spokesman for Insurance4My.com said of the recent problems: ‘It was clear to everyone that the recent snow was going to cause accidents and our claims department have certainly found this to be the case.
‘We hope now that the worst of the weather is behind us but this doesn’t mean that drivers should not be vigilant. A second of lost concentration can result in a car insurance claim – and that means higher premiums for us all in the long run.’
One final area of car insurance claims growth is vehicle theft as several Insurance4my.com customers had their cars taken after leaving them unattended while waiting for them to ‘thaw’. Doing so not only exposes drivers to the risk of vehicle theft, but may also invalidate car insurance policies.
