Personal Injury Claims Push Car Insurance up 11%

by NCI 5. February 2010 08:28

People claiming compensation through no win no fee solicitors are pushing car insurance premiums through the roof putting more emphasis than ever on the value of shopping around away from the biggest insurance brands.

A rapid increase in the number of personal injury claims is forcing insurers to push car insurance premiums up to record levels according to Insurance4My.com.

Overall, the average quoted comprehensive premium rose by 7.2%, sending it through the £1,000 a year barrier for the first time.

Worse still is the rise in third party fire and theft policy premiums, typically bought by young drivers. These went up by 33% over the course of the last year, pricing more and more young people off the road.

Insurance4My.com spokesman Craig Astbury said of the rises: ‘There is no doubt that motorists are taking advantage of the no win no fee lawyers and are claiming for minor injuries that would never have been considered in the past.

‘This situation has made it even more important for people to shop around for quotes away from the biggest car insurance brands as it can now really pay to spend a bit of time shopping around for the best quote.’

That advice is supported by industry figures released this week that suggest that the disparity between the average quoted premium and the cheapest prices paid by those looking for the best deal has risen to £387 a year for comprehensive cover.
