Car Insurance Pothole Claims

by SimonPenson 11. February 2010 09:01

An estimated 30 car insurance claims are pouring into UK car insurers offices each day as a result of damage caused by new potholes.

That is the price Britain’s motorists are now paying for the damaged road surfaces as councils across the British Isles struggle to keep up with the now constant maintenance work involved in fixing them.

The advice to our car insurance customers  is to take extra care when driving on B Roads as the majority of claims reported to Insurance 4 My seem to have been related to this type of roadway. The reason, it is believed, is the combination of deteriorating road surface but also the speed limits on such roads.

While there may be worse roads 30mph limits protect car tyres, wheels and suspension from the worst of the impact of a pothole, but at 50mph or more the forces are multiplied many times over, causing damage that needs to be fixed through your car insurance policy.

A spokesman for one county council we spoke to said: ‘The snow has caused a great deal of damage to road surfaces across the UK and we estimate that in our county alone we could have as many as 100,000 new holes to fix. A job of that size takes time and so we would urge motorists to drive very carefully for the next few weeks.’

It is a stance supported by our own car insurance team as claims for such damage ultimately push the price of car insurance up for all of us.
