Smoking To Make Car Insurance More Expensive?

by SimonPenson 1. April 2010 15:39

The UK’s health experts have this week thrown its backing behind a campaign to ban smoking in all cars to help save children from the effects of toxic smoke.

And while smoking does not have an effect currently on your car insurance policy the belief is it could do very soon as a move to outlaw such a thing could make car insurance firms see it as a potentially dangerous distraction.

If views change and that becomes the case then like any other distracting element it could put you more at risk of a car breakdown or accident as the driver is less aware of the road ahead.

The recommendations are as a result of an extensive report by the Royal College of Physicians, which exposes the numerous health risks to children from smoke and offers potential strategies to tackle the long term problem.

Smoking is already banned in cars used as work places, such as taxis and private hire vehicles but campaigners now want it extending to all cars and motor vehicles.

Whilst smoking in a vehicle does not damage drivers UK motor insurance policies, a lack of concentration smoking at the wheel could ultimately lead to very serious accidents and injury.
