Will Strike Affect Breakdown Cover Members?

by SimonPenson 9. April 2010 10:59

One of the UK’s best known breakdown cover companies has been thrown into disarray with news that its workers reveal they have voted to hold the first strike in more than 100 years.

Breakdown cover and recovery staff at the AA will walk out in a row over their pensions the Independent Democratic Union said following a ballot of its 2,400 members.

The ballot revealed 57% of those voting in support of a walk out in protest over plans to start limiting their pensions.

And if the walk out was to go ahead it could leave a huge number of the UK’s motorists in a spot of bother with fears growing as to how the association would deal with any car breakdowns.

In a statement the IDU told the press: "The IDU National Executive will now meet to decide on the date and nature of strike action to be taken if the AA continues to refuse to enter into meaningful negotiations."

The AA has said, however, that any strike action would be covered by more than 400 non-union member patrol workers and that the pension proposals could yet be accepted by staff.

AA Chief executive Andrew Strong said: "We are proposing reasonable changes to safeguard the future of the pension scheme.”

"Ballots calling for industrial action are premature as we believe that most staff accept the need for change."

If you are concerned about the proposed strike action the Rescue My Car team are available seven days a week to discuss breakdown cover. Call us now on 0800 0199519.
