With latest figures suggesting that 50% of all Scottish travels falling victim to some kind of holiday misfortune Rescue My Car is today pushing for more awareness of the risks of not having European breakdown cover.
Research shows 40% of Scottish travellers have been the victim of a holiday upset such as lost luggage, theft, flight cancellations, car breakdowns or medical emergencies.
However, more than half of those who reported such an incident did not bother to protect themselves by buying adequate insurance or European breakdown cover for going overseas.
Incredibly a third of those that suffered a breakdown while on holiday did not have any cover whatsoever, and as a result have spent millions having to recover their own vehicles back home.
The Bank of Scotland conducted the research into Scottish insurance and breakdown cover habits and said they would also be educating their customers to the benefits of European breakdown cover.
Commenting on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s research Rescue My Car spokesman Craig Astbury said: ‘The cost of not taking out insurance can far outweigh the cost of being well prepared and we fully support the Royal Bank of Scotland in attempting to further educate its customers of the potential costs of not having adequate cover in place for holidays.’
‘Obviously European breakdown cover is only one part of this but it saves many of our customers lots of money.’ He added.
