Breakdown Cover UK - Top 4 Causes of Breakdowns

If you’re buying your first car, or perhaps buying a car for your son or daughter, it is important to be aware of the potential issues that can arise in your car, so you can take the basic steps to help stop these problems, and decrease the potential cost of your claim.

1.  Faulty Batteries: Within Breakdown Cover UK, this is generally the highest cause of breakdown in the UK.  One of the main causes of this is frequent low journeys made regularly, which can lead to low wattage.  A great way to avoid this issue is to take the car for a long drive once a week, or alternatively to simply charge the battery overnight once every fortnight or so.

2.  Again, a regular reason for callouts.  Whilst freak punctures and the like can’t be helped, callouts can often be avoided by simply taking the care to ensure that the tyres are completely inflated, as under-inflated tyres will often lead to punctures.  Simply touching the tyres to ensure they are still at the right pressure can really make a difference.

3.  The alternator.  It might sound like a bad Arnie movie, but the Alternator is a vital component of your car.  Essentially, it controls where your car’s energy goes – everywhere from the headlamps to the windscreen wipers.  If this unit isn’t functioning correctly, then the necessary energy won’t run through to the engine, and the car will stop.  It is important to watch for the warning signs: dulling headlamps, and dimmer dashboard lights, and the slowing of your windscreen wipers.

4. Fuel.  It might sound obvious, but thousands of UK Breakdown cover callouts each year are caused by people simply running out of fuel at the side of a road, or even injecting the wrong type of fuel into their car.  Always make sure that you are careful to input the right type of fuel, otherwise this can cause the car serious damage.  Almost as much damage as the callout might do to your insurance premium.
