Drivers Servicing Their Own Cars 'On The Increase'

by NCI 29. June 2010 16:43

According to a recent survey, there has been an increase in the last twelve months in the number of drivers who are choosing to service their own cars in order to save money: a statistic that seems to highlight the increased importance of UK breakdown cover.

The survey, undertaken by Kwik-Fit, indicated that at least 35% of drivers are now choosing to carry out their own services.  What is unusual about this statistic is that 69% of the drivers who are choosing to do so have admitted they’re not confident about their abilities as a mechanic.

It is very likely that this increasing DIY mechanic trend will lead to an increase of cars driven not being roadworthy, which could consequently lead to both roadside breakdowns increasing, as well as the potential for more road accidents, and lives being lost.

The Customer Services Director at Kwik-Fit, Mr David White, stated that ‘Modern cars are increasingly reliant on computer technology, so there are fewer tasks under the bonnet suitable for an amateur enthusiast.’

Mr White also noted that while MOTs will check on safety factors, car owners should not be reliant on them to pick up smaller faults.  He recommended that taking the car in for a regular service was the most efficient method, as this would ‘highlight issues that could cause a future breakdown’.

This survey follows on from Esure’s previous survey, which provided the similarly surprising result that suggested two-thirds of motorists with no UK breakdown cover would rather attempt repairs in a DIY fashion than call a mechanic.

Given the results from the two surveys, the importance of UK breakdown cover seems all the more important.
