Over Half Of UK Drivers 'Putting Lives At Risk'

by NCI 2. August 2010 09:44

New research released today by the Co-operative Insurance has revealed that over 50% of UK drivers routinely make irresponsible and hazardous choices behind the wheel that endanger both themselves and others on the road.  These new figures really highlight the importance of obtaining both comprehensive motor insurance and the correct UK breakdown cover.

The shocking figures revealed that only one in every ten of the drivers polled considered their driving as being ‘to the speed limit’, and that the fast-paced modern lifestyle was also clearly having an impact on motorists, with a variety of unsuitable activities taking place regularly behind the wheel, including smoking, eating, using a mobile phone, and even getting organized for meetings and putting on make-up.

With speeding continuing to be a major road issue in Britain (the Department of Transport recently released figures that highlight the importance of UK breakdown cover, estimating that at least 59% of drivers were still breaking the speed limit in 30mph areas.

Reacting to these troubling statistics, the function leader at the Co-operative Insurance, Mr Grant Mitchell, stated that whilst driving a car was likely to be the most dangerous activity that people will do each day, that ‘over 50 per cent of drivers are unnecessarily increasing the chances of causing or being involved in an accident’.  Mr Mitchell then went on to note that these risks may not seem like much, but that a moment’s lapse in concentration could result in ‘a road traffic accident that could change your life forever.’

One of the more alarming factors in the research was the causes for speeding, which whilst listing expected results such as driving on a motorway or running late, also gave ‘being in a bad mood’ as a reason that 43% of drivers would give for speeding.
