Fresh Warning Sent Out To Sleepy Motorists

by NCI 17. August 2010 17:30

A new survey commissioned by Direct Line has thrown fresh importance on motorists obtaining the correct UK breakdown cover and comprehensive insurance – a surprising 74% of UK motorists have admitted that they have driven whilst very tired: a practice that carries a very real danger of causing accidents.

Speaking in response to this worrying new statistic, Andy Golby – the man responsible for underwriting and motor pricing at Direct Line – emphasized just how dangerous driving whilst fatigued can be.

Mr Golby stated that driving whilst tired was simply ‘not worth the risk.’  He also noted that fatigue in drivers can cause both a big delay in reaction times, as well as a large decrease in road awareness: both factors that heavily increase the risk of accidents.

This revelation about UK road users comes only two weeks after Co-op research showed that over half of UK drivers had engaged in activities such as smoking, eating and drinking behind the wheel – research which had already increased the concern in drivers regarding obtaining the correct UK breakdown cover and insurance.

The best advice regarding fatigue behind the wheel was simply to ensure that a break was taken, noted Mr Golby: his final damning statement being simply that it is better to arrive at your destination slightly late, than to not arrive at all.
