Breakdown Risk Increased By Incompetent Garages

by NCI 31. August 2010 14:22

The importance of UK breakdown cover has been highlighted by shocking research that reveals the true levels of incompetence at large in many UK garages.

Which?, the consumer watchdog responsible for the research, requested that its members book their cars for a service at a variety of UK garages.  The watchdog examined the cars and took note of any pre-existing problems that a garage would be expected to pick up on, as well as introducing four very simple faults.

Following the service, the Watchdog re-examined the cars to observe if either the deliberate or pre-existing problems were noted and fixed by the garages.  However, a shocking 90% of the services did not note at least one of the potentially dangerous faults, and 39% of the garages made charges for services that were not supplied.  This will no doubt increase the concern amongst drivers, and further the need for drivers to obtain the correct UK breakdown cover.

Speaking on behalf of the watchdog, their Chief Executive Peter Vicary Smith commented that this research was a ‘worrying snapshot’ of an industry that ‘desperately needs to clean up its act’.
‘Almost all the garages in our investigation failed to fix basic faults. This could have endangered the lives of drivers and other road users and is simply not acceptable’ Mr Smith concluded.
