The Main Causes Of Winter Breakdown

Colder mornings, darker evenings and a shed-load of rain can mean only one thing: winter is once again on the way.  It’s easy enough to prepare for in a personal capacity: hot chocolate and a thick duvet normally do the job.  However, when it comes to the cold season, your car can be very susceptible to certain problems.  Whatever form of UK breakdown cover you have, learn to identify the following things and you’ll have a better chance of stopping a problem before it starts.

Battery/Non-starting failures.  In the winter months, this issue accounts for almost half of all calls to the UK breakdown cover companies.  If your car sounds weak or non-distinct when you crank the engine, or your lights begin to dim, then it is likely you are on the verge of a flat battery.  Avoid this problem by immediately taking the time to fully recharge the battery.

Minor Accidents.  With the enhanced hazard in driving conditions during the winter, it is vital to ensure that you are always 100%  focused on the road.  In heavy ice or snow, ensure that you minimize such distracting elements as loud music, using your telephone, or drinking any alcohol at all.

Tyre Issues.  Problems with the tyre take up 9% of all call outs, with winter conditions meaning that it is vital to ensure that not only do you keep a spare tyre, but that it is kept to the legal 1.6mm tread depth.  If it is not, then it may not provide the sufficient traction to keep your car on the road.

Electrical/Mechanical faults.  As with any complicated systems, cold weather conditions combined with a lack of use can lead to wear, tear and damage.  Try to ensure that you give your car at least 20 minutes driving time each day during the winter, to ensure that all the systems tick over.  This is especially important if you are planning a long drive, as this should prevent the system from faulting to due to underuse.
