How To Aid Your Fuel Efficiency

by NCI 19. October 2010 16:26

With the news that running out of fuel is still one of the primary reasons for UK breakdown cover teams being called out, we here at Rescue My Car have come up with some tips that’ll help you avoid making the mistakes that use up the most petrol:

Be sensible with your gears.  Where possible, drive in the highest sensible gear that you can, as this helps save fuel.  A vehicle that is driving a 40 mph in third gear will use up to 25% more fuel than one that is doing the same speed in fifth gear.

Always look ahead.  It may seem obvious, but sensible driving can make a big difference to your fuel consumption.  If you’re always pre-empting situations such as traffic lights and roundabouts, you’ll be less likely to use excessive braking and accelerating which will help you save fuel.

Don’t overpack.  If you’re heading out on a long journey, then make sure that you don’t take anything you really don’t need.  Whilst we’re not suggesting leaving your newborn at home as you swan off to Spain, items such as unnecessary roof racks will make a big difference in your fuel consumption.

Shut The Windows!  Driving with your windows open actually decreases your fuel efficiency far more than simply turning on your air conditioning, so in those rare UK hot days, cranking up the AC is actually far more economical.

Walk!  We all have those days: the days where you just can’t be bothered to walk to the shops at the end of the road.  Well, cutting down on those days is without doubt the best way to save the petrol for the days where you really do need it.
