We’ve previously offered hints and tips on how to cope with a motorway breakdown. However, breaking down on one of Britain’s smaller roads offers its own dangers. Because of this, we’ve come up with some more tips to help you if you suffer a breakdown on a normal road.
Immediately pull over to the side of the road and place your hazard lights on. Not only will this alert other drivers to you, it’ll help your UK breakdown cover team locate you if a callout is necessary.
Always carry a reflective jacket in the car, and put it on in the event of a breakdown. It’s possible that you may be carrying out minor repairs yourself, and other drivers should be aware of you at all times.
If you feel it possible that your vehicle could potentially be struck by other vehicles (if it’s just beyond a blind corner, for instance) then ensure that you and all the other occupants are out of and a safe distance away from your car.
If you are certain that you can repair the damage yourself, ensure that you have placed a warning triangle at least 50 yards down the road from your car, preferably at both ends. This will alert other drivers and also make your UK breakdown cover side aware of when you’re nearby.
Finally, ensure that you never stand between your car and oncoming traffic. If you are unable to fix the problem without doing so, then call out your UK breakdown cover to fix the problem instead: it is not worth the risk.
