Whilst many people will be more than happy to see any glimpse of sun at this time of the year, new research has shown that the sun itself is one of the primary causes of accidents at this time of year, increasing the winter need for UK breakdown cover.
The Institute of Advance Motorists has stated that the dazzle from the low winter sun is a creator of more driving dangers than both travelling at night or bad weather such as snow or ice, and the IAM also has statistics to prove it.
Government figures taken from 2009 stated that sun glare was the primary cause of 2,684 injury crashes, an equal number with headlamp dazzle and bad weather.
With the clock change on October 31st, rush hour drivers will consequently have to contend with the dazzle of low sun in both the morning and the evening, which causes a potential risk and will emphasise the need for UK breakdown cover.
Speaking on behalf of the IAM, their Director of Policy and Research Neil Greig stated that whilst the organization couldn’t ‘change the position of the sun’, they did recommend always keeping your windscreen clear, in order to maximize visibility.
