Warning Issued Over Poor Road Markings

by NCI 17. November 2010 14:00

A leading safety group has warned of the impact that poor road markings can have on some of the UK’s most dangerous roads, leading to increased emphasis on the importance of obtaining the correct UK breakdown cover.

The Road Safety Markings Association had noted that at least half of the road markings in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Sussex had fallen below the minimum standards, with lines being either badly worn or simply not there at all.

Eight of the roads had been identified as being among the UK’s most dangerous, with the A6135 in Sheffield being of the lowest standards, 75% of it’s markings either well worn or just non existent, with UK breakdown cover clearly being a concern in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the RSMA, National Director George Lee commented that this issue brought up some ‘serious for the overall conditions’ of Britain’s road network. Lancashire County Council Member Tim Ashton – responsible for highways and transport – agreed that the improvement of road safety was ‘a real priority’.

The Minister in charge of road safety Mike Penning stated that ‘Britain has one of the best road safety records in the world and local road improvement projects have undoubtedly contributed to this.’

Mr Penning added that there is evidence to suggest that ‘hundreds of lives are save each year because of safety improvements to roads themselves.’
