Woman 'Should Have Known of Car Load Danger'

by NCI 23. November 2010 17:24

The latest news stemming from the world of motoring is sure to give the UK breakdown cover industry a big push, following the news that a Sheffield driver caused death by dangerous driving after a bed base slipped from the roof of her car.

Liza Brothers, 41, was in Sheffield Crown Court yesterday following her inability to correctly tie the bed base to her Vauxhall Vectra Estate, which then flew off the roof of her car whilst she was driving on the A61 Westwood New Road, blocking the path of Helen Denton, also 41, who was killed when she swerved to avoid the debris.

Giving evidence on behalf of Vauxhall, Assistant Manager of Product Evaluation Malcolm Tearle stated that the car’s instructions stated that loads should not be carried without using the provided roof rack.   However, Mrs Brothers ignored the advice, and the news is likely to increase the demand for both comprehensive car insurance and UK breakdown cover.

Prosecutor Corinne Wilson stated that whilst the typical view of dangerous driving involves ‘drivers being persued by police down the highway’, this latest case was also an ‘arm of dangerous driving, and relates to the dangerous condition of the vehicle.’
