UK Motorists Call For Harsher Fines For The Uninsured

by NCI 29. November 2010 14:28

It’s been of little surprise lately that the number of uninsured drivers using Britain’s roads has consistently increased over the course of the last few years.

Latest research in this area has revealed that current legal UK drivers would mainly support an increase in the fine for this crime, noting the increase that uninsured drivers have on both UK breakdown cover and motor insurance.

The recent research, carried out by UK Insurance company Direct Line, indicated that in addition to the almost unanimous support for a fine increase from £200 to £900 (a 350% increase) there were various other potential penalties that UK drivers wanted inflicted on those who drive without insurance.

Some of the more telling statistics are that 34% of UK drivers wanted anyone caught driving without insurance to be forced to retake their test.  Not only that, but 28% wanted the same drivers to be banned for life from driving at all, in order to lower the price of both insurance and UK breakdown cover.

One of the main ideas voiced by UK drivers was the potential for creating a website or hotline through which uninsured drivers can be reported in an anonymous whistle blower style service.

With uninsured drivers costing UK drivers an estimated £30 on every premium, these low tolerance views regarding those who continue to break this law comes as not much of a surprise.
