With many UK motorists having been given an extended holiday period, those lucky enough to have the long break have been urged to check their cars in advance of the UK wide Tuesday 4th return date, to help avoid potential first day back nightmares.
Many of the UK motorists might not have used their car at all across the break, and it is possible that the wintry conditions that took effect country-wide could well have increased a car’s risk of a breakdown or accident when it is used again.
Commenting on the situation, RAC Patrol Ambassador Alan Wilcock commented that ‘The combination of a long break and cold damp weather can be a recipe for disaster. A car’s electrical system has to work a lot harder at this time of year as drivers are more likely to use their lights, heated windows as well as the heater fan. The starter motor also has to work harder to start the engine on these cold mornings making a battery failure more likely.’
The RAC also noted that to help avoid a breakdown, customers should carry out some routine checks before using their car after the long break, including checking oil and water, topping up and charging batteries, as well as keeping such items as screenwash with you to help ensure that any frost can be removed.
