In the news last week, we reported that there was likelihood of the coalition government introducing legislation to make possessing an uninsured car illegal – a contrast to current laws which state that it is only illegal to drive a car without insurance, but that simply keeping one without driving it was acceptable.
The new measure, which will become part of the Continous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) regulations, has been highly praised and lauded by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA), who have declared themselves ‘delighted’ at the introduction of the new laws. The Broker’s Association have been lobbying for the introduction of the legislation ‘since 2004’ according to their spokespeople.
The association added that the new law would ‘create a fairer system for responsible motorists’ whose breakdown cover UK firms had been forced to add an average of £30 per year to standard cover as a direct result of the thousands of uninsured drivers that take to the UK’s roads every day.
BIBA are not the only organization impressed with this news, however. Ashton West, the Chief Executive of the Motor Insurer’s Bureau has recently observed that the legal requirement for breakdown cover UK firms to provide cover for all cars would leave uninsured drivers with ‘no place to hide.’
