Latest news from the motoring industry is likely to increase the need for breakdown cover UK wide, as it’s revealed that nearly half of the country’s motorists are currently putting themselves at risk of ‘jacking’ robberies due to the winter weather.
The research, which was completed by insurance company Swiftcover.com, revealed that 47% of UK motorists have been leaving their engine to warm up unattended as a result of the non-relenting freezing temperatures.
Swiftcover have condemned this practise, warning that it is a very serious risk for motorists to take. It also revealed that these particular thefts are currently totaling £12.7 million in costs every year in the UK.
What many breakdown cover UK customers have not realized is that if this crime happens to them, then their insurance company is very unlikely to cover the cost of the theft. The owner responsible would be considered to be not taking due care with their vehicle, and as such would end up responsible for costs.
Various consumer watchdogs have also joined in with the debate, noting the importance for motorists to increase vigilance in the winter months as well as minimizing their vulnerability to thieves. An ‘It won’t happen to me’ mentality is considered the main reason for this current practise, and insurance providers would heavily advise being more careful when it comes to vehicle security.
