EU Women To Lose Their Insurance Discounts

by NCI 22. February 2011 14:26

As was widely rumoured last month, it has now been widely confirmed that future insurance and breakdown cover UK companies will soon be banned from giving men additional charges on their policies, in line with new discrimination laws from the European courts.

The ruling, which is due to arrive from the courts on March 1st, is expected by industry insiders to ban any form of ‘gender discrimination’ within the insurance industry.  Many insurers are reportedly already preparing to adjust for the changes, which will mean that insurance premiums for young males are likely to be significantly lowered to bring them more in line with equivalent policies for females.

It has long been common practise for insurance and breakdown cover UK policies to be significantly higher for young men due to their increased likelihood of suffering both accidents and illness.  However, the European Court’s Advocate General deemed this pricing as discriminatory in a test case initially heard in September 2010.  It is considered almost certain that the High Court will consequently uphold this decision.

Head of the Professional Insurance Brokers Association Diarmuid Kelly has confirmed that this is the industry wide expectation, stating that ‘While no one can, at this stage, be certain of the outcome, the likelihood is that the test case will succeed.’

It has been advised by many companies that it might be prudent for those needing a policy to wait until after March 1st to take it out, with males especially likely to benefit from the new ruling.
