by NCI 10. March 2011 09:21

The news that sex discrimination would become outlawed with regards to car insurance and breakdown cover UK wide has inevitably brought with it a variety of opinions from all corners.  Now further opposition has been brought against the EU ruling from an industry expert.

Peter Staddon, the Head of Technical Services for the British Insurance Broker’s Association (BIBA) has insisted that statistics show women to be both better and safer users of the road than men, and that this meant the new law would result in them being punished in terms of their policy costs for the mistakes of male drivers.

Mr Staddon had been speaking before the ruling - which has now been passed and is expected to be brought into UK legislation on 21 December 2012 – had been officially confirmed.  He noted that the law would be ‘wrong’ and that essentially it would mean women were ‘penalised because men can’t drive properly.’

Research has shown that ‘when we start looking at males and females, specifically in the motor arena, women are better drivers’.  Whilst the latest news from the insurance and breakdown cover UK wide industry revealed that several female focused companies (such as Sheila’s Wheels) will not be changing their marketing aims, it remains to be seen just how much of an impact this policy will have on the industry when it is officially brought into the British Isles.
