'Illegal' Insurance Being Obtained By Parents

by NCI 15. April 2011 16:01

The latest research from the world of UK motor insurance has revealed that many parents are still participating in the practise known as ‘fronting’ – that is, insuring their child’s car in their name and then naming their child as the second driver.  Despite the fact that fronting is so common, it remains illegal – something that apparently over half of parents are unaware of.

Moneysupermarket.com, the company responsible for the research, have highlighted the dangers that come with participating in fronting, Car Insurance expert Peter Harrison noting that ‘There can be serious repercussions if the parents, or the young driver, are caught fronting because their insurance will be invalidated. Further ramifications could result in a younger driver ending up in court being charged with driving without insurance.’

It is a well timed warning in one sense, with the legislation beginning this week that is designed to crack down on insurance dodgers, particularly those who claim to not be driving their vehicle.  Continuous Insurance Enforcement makes it an illegal practise to keep an uninsured vehicle without a statutory off road notification, where as it had previously only been a crime to actually drive uninsured.

New punishments for contravening this law include anything from a £100 fine to the car in question being clamped on the driveway.  What is more of a concern, though, is that research by the AA reveals that nearly two in three drivers are not aware of the law, making obtaining the right insurance and breakdown cover UK wide a good idea.
