UK Motorists Warned To Not Over-Pack At Easter

by NCI 16. April 2011 13:03

Families that are planning an away trip over the Easter season have been given a warning against potentially over-loading their cars, a new report indicating that this practise could end up potentially impacting their family safety.

Research – commissioned by Britannia Rescue – has shown that over eight million drivers have chosen to overload their cars in the last five years, with one fifth admitting that they don’t even contemplate the weight of their car when packing.

An overloaded car can be dangerous and more prone to breaking down, especially on roads that are poorly maintained, due to the extra pressure that is placed on the car’s suspension.  With Britain’s roads still suffering from large amounts of potholes due to the extreme winter weather, this news will undoubtedly be an alarm call for motorists to obtain the correct breakdown cover UK.

It’s not just the suspension, however, as overloading the car also leads to the obstruction of the rearview mirrors – something that one in seven drivers admitted to having done whilst driving anyway -, as well as making the car harder to stop (6 per cent noted this situation occurring whilst driving).

Commenting on the worrying news, the Britannia Rescue Marketing Director noted that ‘With Easter upon us and the excitement of summer holiday season fast approaching, it's completely understandable that motorists may not be considering the dangers caused by overloading their car. But it's vital to put safety first, especially when UK roads are in such a state of disrepair.’
