Male Drivers 'More Prone To Distraction.'

by NCI 26. April 2011 09:05

Latest research arising from the world of UK motoring has provided a fairly damning profile of male drivers.  Given the recent European Court revelation that insurance costs can no longer be calculated according to gender, the news comes at a time that many will consider rather ironic.

The research – which was revealed by financial provider Santander – showed that 11% of males who had suffered some form of accident whilst driving confessed that they had been distracted before the incident occurred, compared to the figure for women, which stood at just 5%.

Other figures revealed in the survey included the fact that a third of men and a fifth of women reported nearly having accidents as a result of a variety of different distractions.

Listed top of the distractions was adjusting the stereo (which 76% of those surveyed mentioned) drinking/eating and handling CDs (66% and 50% respectively), making it apparent that many UK drivers were still happy to take the risks.

Commenting on the results, Santander’s Director of Insurance Colin Greenhill stated that ‘Clearly, motorists understand their risky behaviours are dangerous but as many as 75 per cent own up to taking their eyes off the road to do something other than driving.’
