New laws have now come into practise that will undoubtedly have an effect on the world of cheap breakdown cover as well as UK motor insurance. It is now a legal requirement for cars to be insured even if they are not being driven.
New legislation has granted the power of enforcement regarding this law to the DVLA, who have already made UK motorists aware of what punishments will be issued in the event that anyone chooses to not obey the ruling.
If any driver is expected to be contravening this law, then they will receive a letter notifying them that they are expected to take action to amend the fact that their car is not insured, and a £100 fine will be issued should nothing be done to amend the situation.
If there is still not action taken then, whether the fine is paid or not, the car could end up being clamped, seized and destroyed.
The laws were brought about due to the current large amount of uninsured drivers that continue to be a substantial risk on the UK road network, with an estimated £30 being added to each insurance premium as a result. Not only that, but it is estimated that at least 23,000 people each year are injured by uninsured drivers.
One of the main tasks for the DVLA now will be to ensure that the laws are upheld, and with six in ten motorists estimated to not be aware of the new law, it will be interesting to note how successful they will prove to be.
