Petrol Retailers Warned To Aid Motorists

by NCI 13. May 2011 10:07

One of the primary concerns in the current UK motoring environment is the ever increasing cost of fuel, a problem that is consistently causing more and more drivers to tone down on the amount that they drive and even the amount of cars that they run.  However, retailers have been told that they should be more prepared to help motorists due to the recent drop in price of oil.

The AA have highlighted the fact that due to Brent Crude falling from $126 per barrel to below $110 during last month, that pump prices would be able to come down to eight pence per litre, leading to at least some reductions for motorists that had been expected to pay up to £6 per gallon in order to fill up their car.

The director of the RAC Foundation Stephen Glaister had stated that the ever increasing petrol prices should lead to an investigation into whether those retailing fuel were acting like they were part of a cartel rather than simply providers, a point that the AA seem to agree with

‘It's frightening that not content with giving drivers and business a runaway roller coaster ride on oil price speculation today the traders seem to want even more by threatening doomsday scenarios on oil prices for next year’ commented the AA’s President Edmund King.

Speaking on behalf of the RAC Foundation, Director Stephen Glaister stated that it was ‘important for household budgets that there is a competitive market and that families are getting a fair deal.’

The Labour Transport Spokesman stated that motorists had already been conned by the VAT increase, and that they were now ‘being ripped off by a failure to ensure cuts in oil prices are matched at the pump.’
