Motorists have been issued another warning by the government regarding the importance of obtaining the correct insurance alongside their existing breakdown cover UK wide, in advance of new laws due to come in next week.
From June 20th, it will be illegal for motorists to keep any vehicle that isn’t covered under an insurance policy – altering the current laws which state that it is only illegal to physically drive uninsured vehicles.
The main reason for the introduction of this new legislation was in order to crackdown on the amount of cars that are driven without insurance – an illegal practise that is currently estimated to be putting at least £30 on the cost of every law abiding driver’s current premium, at a total cost of £500 million to UK motorists.
The Road Safety Minister Mike Penning stated that the ‘message is clear – get insured or face a fine, court action or seeing your car seized and destroyed.’
Following a recent revelation that many UK drivers were still not aware of the new law, the Motor Insurer’s Bureau has since instigated a new nationwide advertising campaign to try and raise awareness. This has been described as a ‘bold move’ by the British Insurer’s Association.
The new law will certainly throw more emphasis on the importance of the correct insurance and breakdown cover UK wide.
