Car Crime Battle Being Won

by NCI 23. June 2011 09:08

The latest figures from the world of UK motoring have revealed that motor crime has decreased over the last year compared with that of previous years.  It has been shown that a total of 107,000 vehicles were estimated to have been stolen during the course of the last year, which was compared with 119,000 during 2009 and 143,000 in 2008.  Around 20 years ago the estimated figure was at around 600,000.

Research had been obtained from Thatcham – a motor insurance repair and research centre, and their director of research Andrew Miller stated that ‘We are doing everything possible to crack down on car crime. Now it is the motorist's responsibility to drive down vehicle theft figures.’

Mr Miller stated that that decrease in thefts was primarily down to ‘the incredible improvements to a raft of security systems including alarms, locks, immobilisers, toughened glass and tracking devices.’

The announcement was timed well, as it co-incided with the latest British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards, which announced that Volkswagen UK were the manufacturer that had done the most to maximise their vehicle’s security.

Speaking on behalf of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Chief Paul Everitt stated that ‘Car and van manufacturers take vehicle security very seriously and strive to stay one step ahead of criminals.’
