Breakdown Recovery - What do you do if you break down?

by Rescuemycar 5. September 2011 09:02

In the unfortunate event that your car breaks down on the motorway or elsewhere, what are you going to do? It’s obvious you’re going to need the relevant breakdown cover to avoid being stuck at the roadside for, well, forever. This is where Rescuemycar.com’s breakdown recovery service comes in; not only does Rescuemycar.com recover your clearly dysfunctional vehicle from the side of the road, but our breakdown recovery experts here at Rescuemycar.com also provide a cheap, reliable and sought-after breakdown service. During the short time it takes us to come and recover your vehicle, Rescuemycar.com has a few tips on what to do in the meantime…

What to do if you breakdown on a motorway

1. First things first; you must try to avoid stopping in the middle of the motorway as stopping will provide a dangerous obstruction to oncoming vehicles. If possible, drive onto the hard shoulder and drive as far left as you possibly can to make sure you’re out of any other vehicle’s way.  If you aren’t in reach of a hard shoulder then stop in the safest place possible, preferably far out of the carriageway.

2. Turn on your hazards and sidelights. This makes you visible to oncoming traffic as well as your recovery team.

3. Exit the car using the left-hand door and be sure to alert your passengers to do the same.

4. Once outside of the car, now’s not the time for heroics. Don’t attempt to fix the car or even find the cause of the problem.

5. Call for help – you can call Rescuemycar.com on 08452034700 who will rush to your rescue in an average time of 40 minutes. If you don’t have a mobile then you can access an emergency telephone at the end of a carriageway. Do not cross the carriageway under any circumstance.
Note that you shouldn’t attempt to place any warning device on the carriageway.

What to do if you breakdown on other roads

1. Stop well out of the way of incoming traffic in order to avoid causing an obstruction, where possible. If you fear that you are obstructing the road and may be hit by oncoming traffic, then exit the vehicle along with any passengers.

2. Switch on your hazard lights in order to warn other drivers and put on any reflective jackets you may have.

3. If you have a warning triangle at hand, then place this at least 45 metres behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road.

4. If the weather is/becomes a little dark or foggy, then turn on your sidelights so that oncoming traffic will notice you. This same applies if you happen to break down at night.

5. If you feel that the break down is beyond your question or expertise, then call for help. You can call Rescuemycar.com on 08452034700 who will recover you in an average time of 40 minutes depending on whereabouts you have broken down.
