Driving in Europe - what will you need?

by Rescuemycar 31. October 2011 09:20

When you’re taking to the foreign roads and venturing through unfamiliar locations, it’s always good to be prepared for the worst. Besides, if you breakdown abroad without any breakdown cover or simply forget to bring your driving documents along with you, you could be out of pocket before your holiday has even started. In order to make sure you’re not faced with either of these situations, Rescuemycar.com has put together a few basics for driving around in Europe.

Got your docs?

It’s important that you take the relevant driving documents abroad with you, just in case you’re asked to provide them unexpectedly. It’s a good idea to keep all of your documents in the glove box or somewhere where you can get to them easily. If you’re unable to produce the documents required, you may be faced with a hefty fine or even worse, vehicle confiscation. Don’t run the risk for the sake of a little bit of paper!

So, what documents may you actually need? Even if you don’t think you’ll even need all of them, it’s best to take the whole set of documents with you just in case. The first essential is your driving license. This must be a full valid driving license, not a provisional! Bring your paper counterpart along too for the full proof of your license validity.

What other documents should you take?

  • Your vehicle’s registration documents
  • Your passport (for identification purposes)
  • Your vehicle's insurance certificate
  • Any other useful documents you think you may need

·     Pack a map

Although it’s not at all compulsory to have a map, it’s a bit of a pain getting lost, especially in a foreign country. It’s worth taking a couple of pocket size map and popping them in your boot, just in case you lose one of them.

Car Essentials

Most European countries deem it compulsory for all motorists to carry the following:

  • A warning triangle
  • A reflective jacket
  • A GB sticker

Failure to carry these essentials may result in a fine.

Breakdown cover and insurance

Two of the most important things to think about before travelling abroad are – does your insurance policy cover you in a foreign country? Do you have European Breakdown cover? If not, then it’s worth looking into Rescuemycar.com’s reliable European breakdown cover and insurance policies.

Choose from European Breakdown Cover (full annual policy) or the European Short Period Breakdown Cover. Rescuemycar.com also offers Motorcycle Breakdown Cover, Van Breakdown Cover and Fleet Breakdown Cover.
