As the days get shorter and the weather turns, a few quick checks can make a big difference to safety and reliability. Here’s a handy autumn checklist to help you prepare.
Tyres and tread
Aim for at least 3mm tread for better wet-road grip. Check tyre pressures too against your handbook.
Wipers and screen wash
Replace streaky blades and top up screen wash with winter-grade fluid to tackle glare and road grime.
Lights and visibility for autumn
Test all bulbs (headlights, brakes, indicators etc). Keep a microfiber cloth in the glovebox to easily clean windows.
Battery health
Cold snaps expose weak batteries. If cranking feels slow, or the car struggles after short trips, get the battery tested.
Brakes
If you notice squeaks, vibrations or longer stopping distances, book an inspection before conditions worsen.
Fluids
Check the oil level, coolant and antifreeze strength.
Heating, demist and A/C
Make sure your fans, rear window heater and A/C work well to clear fogged screens quickly.
Emergency kit
Pack torch, charger and power bank, ice scraper, de-icer, blanket, basic first aid kit and warning triangle for emergencies.
Autumn driving habits
Leave longer stopping distances on wet, leaf-covered roads. Watch for low sun glare and earlier dusk.
